What Is DALI Dimming?

DALI dimming is a digital lighting control system widely used in commercial, industrial and modern building projects. It allows LED lighting to be controlled accurately, providing greater flexibility over brightness, lighting zones and energy usage.

But what exactly is DALI, and how does it work with LED drivers?

What Does DALI Stand For?

DALI stands for Digital Addressable Lighting Interface. It is a digital communication protocol designed specifically for lighting control.

Unlike traditional dimming methods, DALI allows individual LED drivers and luminaires to be digitally addressed and controlled. This makes it possible to control individual lights, groups of lights or entire lighting zones from a central control system.

How Does DALI Dimming Work?

A DALI LED driver communicates with a compatible DALI lighting control system using a digital control signal.

The driver receives commands from the control system and adjusts the LED light output accordingly. This means lighting can be dimmed to specific levels rather than simply being switched on or off.

DALI can also be used alongside sensors and automated controls to adjust lighting depending on occupancy or available daylight.

Benefits of DALI LED Drivers

Precise Dimming

DALI provides accurate digital control over LED lighting, allowing brightness levels to be adjusted to suit the application.

Individual & Group Control

Each compatible driver can be individually addressed or assigned to a group, making it easier to control different areas of a building.

Energy Efficiency

DALI can help reduce energy consumption by allowing lights to be dimmed when full brightness isn’t required and by integrating with sensors and automated lighting controls.

Flexible Lighting Control

Lighting groups and settings can be changed as requirements evolve, making DALI particularly useful for commercial buildings.

What Is DALI-2?

DALI-2 is the newer generation of the DALI standard. It expands the capabilities of DALI and supports a wider range of control devices and components.

When specifying a DALI LED driver, it’s important to check whether the project requires standard DALI or DALI-2 compatibility.

Can Existing LED Lighting Be Converted to DALI?

In many cases, existing LED lighting can be converted to DALI by replacing the current LED driver with a suitable DALI dimmable LED driver.

The replacement driver must be compatible with the LED load, output requirements and existing control system. DALI conversion can therefore be a practical way to upgrade existing lighting without replacing the entire luminaire.

Where Is DALI Used?

DALI lighting control is commonly found in:

  • Offices
  • Retail spaces
  • Schools
  • Hotels
  • Warehouses
  • Industrial buildings
  • Commercial developments

It is particularly useful where lighting needs to be controlled across multiple areas or integrated with other building systems.
