Signs & Symbols on LED Drivers
How often do the markings on an LED driver go unnoticed? As an everyday person most of these symbols will probably seem strange and obscure and probably bear no relevance, if the item works that’s all you need to know right? Even to the electrical/lighting professionals a lot of these symbols can be quite unfamiliar. But be assured that every symbol has an important and relevant meaning, here at Luna LED we want to help you better understand all the marking to give you complete satisfaction of the products your working with. We carefully make sure that our brand meets all the safety and performance requirements to give you a quality long lasting LED Driver. Below are a few common symbols that can be found on LED Drivers manufactured by all the top brands, these can also be found or Harpo & Chico range of drivers.
CE Marking
The CE marking is required for many products because it:shows that the manufacturer has checked these products meet EU safety, health or environmental requirements, is an indicator of a product’s compliance with EU legislation, allows the free movement of products within the European market.
UKCA Marking
Much like the CE Marking, The UKCA marking is the conformity marking used for products being placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales). Products covered by the UKCA marking meet the relevant requirements for safety, health or environmental standards.
Protection Classes
There are numerous types of protection classes which specify measures to prevent dangerous contact voltages on unenergized parts.
The Class 1 symbol usually represents the need of an external earth wire to keep the product safe as there is only a basic insulation to protect the product.
The class 2 symbol or (double insulated) usually means that the product is protected by at least two layers of insulation and requires no earth.
The Class 3 symbol represents products that operate at SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage) meaning that product does not produce enough voltage for an electric shock, generally the output of these items are 50v or below.
Indoor Use only
The house symbol is used to identify electrical equipment designed primarily for indoor use. Referenced in: IEC 60335-2-29;IEC 60335-2-67;IEC 60335-2-68;IEC 60335-2-69;IEC 60335-2-72;IEC 60335-2-79;IEC 60335-2-116;IEC 60598-2-4;IEC 60598-2-20;IEC 60598-2-21;IEC 61558-1;IEC 61851-3-1;IEC 62840-2
Independent lighting auxiliary
To identify independent lighting auxiliaries for discharge lamps such as fluorescent lamps or high-pressure mercury vapour, low-pressure sodium vapour, high-pressure sodium vapour and metal halide lamps. Referenced in: IEC 60364-5-55, IEC 60920, IEC 60922, IEC 60926, IEC 60928, IEC 61046, IEC 61050, IEC 61347-1
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)
Electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) is regulated to reduce the amount of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) incinerated or sent to landfill sites.Reduction is achieved through various measures which encourage the recovery, reuse and recycling of products and components.
Safety isolating transformer, short-circuit proof
This symbol is to identify a short-circuit proof safety isolating transformer. Referenced in: IEC 60364-5-55;IEC 61347-2-13;IEC 61558-2-6
Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS)
In the UK many types of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) are regulated to control the levels of certain hazardous substances and chemicals they contain, with the aim of protecting human and animal health. This symbol shows the product is compliant and can often be accompanied by a green leaf or tick.
Safety extra-low voltage (SELV)
Also known as Seperated extra-low voltage, is "an electrical system in which the voltage cannot exceed ELV under normal conditions, and under single-fault conditions, including earth faults in other circuits". Usually meaning the product is operates below 50V AC & 120V DC.
Ingress Protection (IP Rating)
The IP rating of a product indicates how well a device is protected against water and dust. The first number represents protection against solid objects with 2 being the lowest protection and 6 being the highest. The second number represents protection against liquids with 0 being the lowest and 8 the highest.
German Safety
This is symbol indicates that the transformer meets German safety standards. In addition, the electrical transformers bearing this symbol may be placed on wooden surfaces.
